Winter Wonderland

Image
Honestly, I am so ready to hibernate while watching the forecast for the next few days. Even though it took a while for NY to get really cold like usual this year, once the real cold hit NY, I was like "I'm done. Wake me up when spring comes." 2015 was supposedly the record breaking hottest year. While I really don't mind having warmer weather, it also concerns me about many, many things such as rise of sea levels, abnormal frequency of hurricanes and endangered of animals. Maybe it's time to go back and re-read my older post about conserving energy.and Ryan Gosling. Anyhow, while we could be buried in snow in the East Coast, there are some brighter things I can love more because it is winter. 1. Hot Chocolate. I mean, really. Who wouldn't like hot chocolate in the winter? I don't really like hot chocolate in the summer or any other season but isn't it winter survival 101? ...with Marshmallow? Yes please. 2. Ramen. This c...

New Year, New Start.

Image
I know it's late but  H a p py N e w Y e a r! Hope everyone had a wonderful 2015. Personally, it was a bit of bitter start last year but overall everyone I love was healthy and happy. Many great things happened to Pigeon Dynamite so I cannot complain. I don't really set a goal or year resolution particularly..but I love welcoming new year as a fresh new start. In Japan, we do this "tidy up" household before new year as a tradition. It is to clean up the whole house to get rid of bad spirit and prepare to welcome the new year to bring good luck.  There are many Japanese New Year's Shinto traditions and I love the whole event. From the New Years Eve to the New Years Day, people in Japan celebrate the day eating soba noodle, which they believe it is to wish for longevity.  The Japanese kids get cold, hard cash gift called "Otoshi-dama" from their parents and relatives. It is like kids receiving gifts from Santa Clause on C...

Merry Special Note

It's the time of the year again.  New York City is filled with lights and illuminations. People are holding gifts for their loved ones and hurrying to their warm home. Christmas time is my favorite season too-Even though I hate the cold, this winter has been really really mellow in New York. I think this winter has been the warmest since I moved here in 2007. It feels like it was yesterday that I moved here from California...not. I totally lied. I don't feel like it was yesterday at all. Rather, it actually feels like I've been in New York since I left Japan, which is three years before I had left California.  I've had 9 winters in New York since I moved here, and a few winters I spent some times in Japan. But I feel like I've actually spent 18 winters here already because winter here is bloody freezing and deadly too long. And again, I hate winter-but then why the hell am I still here? Well, obviously simply because it is  New York.  For the t...

Put your heart in it.

I cannot believe that it's already end of October. I cannot possibly believe 2015 is ending so soon and 2016 is coming that I can believe. I feel like every year goes like this. October was a busy month for Pigeon Dynamite and I've been organizing and consolidating things around me. It's sort of my ritual thing to prepare for the new beginning of anything.  Karl Lagerfeld, a designer of his own name brand, Chanel and Fendi (in short, he's the boss),  said that he does not like to look back what he's achieved. He says he does not see the need of creating clothes that have emotions in the design after making clothes for decades to one of the fashion critics who said "Karl Lagerfeld's clothes do not have emotion." It's interesting that I could totally understand how he is not interested in the past because I think he simply has no time to look back and even if he did have time to look back, I think he'd still rather think about the ...

Almost Autumn

Image
Autumn is my absolute favorite season besides spring (but probably even better.) Summer is great, even now I don't live as close to the beach as I used to in San Diego (15-20 min drive to any beaches..sweet!) here in NYC, summer is still fun and inspiring. But it's just fall is so much more to me. The color deepens, the food tastes better, air is crisper, coffee feels more comforting and I feel more creative and productive. It's like the pigments of every colors I see outside become more vivid and it's almost too beautiful and I cannot take it. Luckily the fall in the northeast gives the best part of my favorite season compared to what it did in SoCal which was a lot more muted. I remember the colors of Nara in the fall when I visited last year.   Even though it was passed the best time of their leaf watching season, it was still magnificent. I've seen better time, but it is always lovely to see the beautiful parks in the fall in Japan. I th...

Thank You 1000 Times

August was the best month for Pigeon Dynamite . I finally have over a hundred sales on Etsy officially and August recorded the highest sales since I opened the shop. It was a busy month and a very very productive month. So thank you, thank you so so much.  I sincerely thank each one of Pigeon Dynamite supporters. Without you, I couldn't have done any of this.  Because of your support, I could start the ring collections of my own this year besides the upcycled jewelry pieces. Each one of your support made it possible for me to create my expanding collections. I still remember the excitement of the first sale I made on Etsy. The excitement and nerve racking experience to sell something I made to someone I've never met or know.   Ever since I launched the shop on Etsy in 2013, I was just trying to do as much as I could to push my business. But it was difficult, obviously. Not only because I was so naive about running my own business bu...
