Special Report*Interview with Paul and Kevin *Custom Wedding Bands

This blog post is very, very special to me because...

It's Pigeon Dynamite's FIRST custom wedding bands and the couple kindly allowed me to interview and share their experience.

The rings are both 14k gold but they wanted in different gold; Kevin wanted his to be yellow gold and Paul was white gold.

At the first initial meeting, they briefly told me what they like, and what they don't like.

Since I knew Paul from the design school years, I understood his design preference and what his style was right away; he wanted something has little more unique twist with heavier texture. On the other hand, Kevin prefers something simpler but same tone of organic style. 

They brought the basic requests like Kevin wanted something thinner with yellow gold and Paul wanted bit of uniqueness in design in white gold.

Then that was pretty much all they requested, and the rest was left in my hands.

There are couple of things I must say why I loved working with these gentlemen.

One is because they are so easy-going, laid back and open to ideas.

I sent them couple of idea sketches initially and they picked what they liked.

Knowing what you like is so important when it is something like a custom ring.

Oh, yes! And these back and fourth communication was done mostly via emails and they were fantastic communicators.

So I must say they made it so easy for me to work on their custom wedding bands.

Besides these design elements key words they gave me, I made sure those bands are comfortable.

All my handcrafted rings are finished by me, and the final check is always the comfort.

Something like wedding bands have to be comfortable to wear everyday.

And I am so honored to have worked on such special meaningful pieces.

It's truly one of a kind pieces and the pieces you can see and feel the craftsmanship.

The piece that you can obviously see it's made by hand leaves such special impressions.

And this interview is from the time when they received their custom wedding bands in the beautiful afternoon of sunny Brooklyn. Enjoy!

R) Did you enjoy the process? How was your experience overall?

K&P) Yes! It was super smooth and easy. You made it effortless for us. The design and everything.

R) How happy with the rings now that you finally got to wear?

K) So happy! 

P) Over the moon!

R) Why did you choose handmade over conventional rings which you two bought initially and ended up not liking them?

K) It's symbolic. It's just for us. One of a kind.

P) It's more personal and more special.

R) What part you love about your ring?

K) It's so comfortable. I forget that I am wearing a ring!

P) It's so comfortable and it looks like it's got history already in the design.

R) Yes, it will get scratched but it will only add more character to the ring for its design. Well, since you both chose different rings whereas it's pretty common that couples wear matching wedding bands, I wanted to ask you why you chose different rings? And should it be matching at all?

P&K) No, don't think wedding bands need to be matching. It's more a symbol of who you are.

K) Even when you are married, you are still this individual.

R) I know that having you both picking different colored gold was so right. Depends on your skin tone, yellow gold looks better on some people and some people look better with rose gold or white gold or platinum.

P&K) We knew that from the beginning what gold we liked and looked better.

R) So, with your experience, is there any advice for the couples who are interested in custom wedding bands?

P&K) They should pick the metal, you know, material they like. Which gold, or color. Design.

Design is so important. Price, well, it's really secondary, even when you have some budget. You should think about those first.

Pigeon Dynamiteにとって初となるカスタムウェディングバンドのリポートだからです！

オーダーを頂いた時は本当に嬉しくて、でも凄いプレッシャーもあって、良いものを作るぞ！と頑張って頑張って、世界に一つだけのものを心を込めて、手作りさせて頂きました！

そして特別に、今回はカップル（ポールとケビン）のインタビューも許可を得てお届けします！

先ずはリングたち。最初のミーティングでは、二人にそれぞれの好みのデザイン、特にどんなデザインが好き、とかゴールドの色の好みなどをざっくりと相談して後日スケッチをしたデザイン画をいくつかメールで送って色々とメールでのやり取りをしながらデザインを決定していきました。

このカップルとお仕事をさせて頂いて、本当に良かったなと思う点がいくつもありますが、デザインのアイデアに対してオープンであるという事がすごく作り手としても楽しんでデザインさせてもらえたところだと思います。

二人ともとってもオープンな性格で、本当に全てがスムーズに運びました。

メールでのやり取りでもしっかり自分の好みやアイデアを伝えてくれるところも凄く刺激になりました。

ケビンは仕事上でもスムーズでやや細身のものが良い、と最初に伝えられていて、一方でポールは、もっと大胆にテクスチャーが重めのものでホワイトゴールドが好きだという事だったので、

二人ともオーガニックなデザインは共通に、ケビンは上品なイエローゴールドを選んだ事もあって、ラスティックな木目デザイン、ポールは重みのある、オークのようなデザインに決まりました。

何よりも、結婚指輪だから絶対につけ心地が良くないといけません。

私の作る指輪は全て最終のチェックはつけ心地を確認してからになります。

仕上げも全て私が行うので、やっぱりデザインが素敵でも、肌に触れる部分が心地よくないリングは好きになれないので、絶対に確認を怠ることはできません。

ではでは、リングを始めて手にした二人のインタビューで今回はお別れです。

私、以下R） デザインから全てカスタムでの製作過程でしたが、感想は？

ケビン、以下K）凄く簡単に思えたよ。

ポール、以下P）りえが全部やってくれたからね、凄くエフォートレスに行ったよ。

R）その過程を乗り越えて、ようやくリングとのご対面と成りましたね。どうですか？

K）とってもハッピーだよ。

P）超嬉しいね。

ハンドメイドを選ばれた理由はありますか？（実はカスタムリング購入の前に市販のリングを購入していた二人。あまり好きではなかったよう。）

K）だって象徴的なものにしたかったからね。自分達ためだけに作られたリングって。二つとないものだよ。

P）パーソナルだし、特別なものにしたかったからね。

R）リングのお気に入りの部分はありますか？

K）本当につけ心地が良い。指輪を着けてるの忘れるよ！

P）本当にそうだね。それにもう歴史が刻まれているようなデザインが好きだな。

R）そう、そのデザインはこれからスクラッチされていってもデザインの一部として吸収されるようなリングなんです。 二人とも、異なったリングにしましたが、マリッジバンドをお揃いにしなかった理由はありますか？そもそもお揃いにする必要性は感じましたか？

P＆K）全然。お揃いにする必要なんてないよ。それは個人を象徴するものであるべきだよ。

K）結婚していても個人である事に変わりはないからね。

 R）二人とも異なるゴールドを選んだのはとても正解だったと今目の前にして本当に思います。肌のトーンでイエローゴールドが似合う人とそうじゃない人がいますし、ホワイトゴールドが似合えば、ローズゴールドがしっくりくる人もいますよね。

P＆K）僕たちは最初からどのゴールドが自分達に似合うのか知ってたからね。

R）今回のカスタムリングの過程を通して、将来カスタムリングのオーダーを考えているカップルにアドバイスがあればお願いします。

P＆K）自分の似合う素材を選ぶ事かな。どの色のゴールドとか。あとはデザイン。デザインはとても重要。値段もそうだけど、まぁ予算なんかは最初に考えるような事じゃないと思うね。デザインと自分の好みを考える事がよっぽど大事だよ。
