New York*Pigeon Dynamite*Nippon

I know it's been, again, a long time since the last post!

It's been quite busy, happily, and finally I found the "in between time" during the production, so I decided to write out the blog post this time.



As many of you may know now that I came from interior design/architecture background.

I used to love post modern architecture and still do, but as I get older, I started to appreciate classical architecture more.

This is probably more to do with my own personality but I tend to be pretty much "black and white"on many things; I know almost immediately whether I like or not.

I've started to learn how not to sort of reject everything that I dislike.

(Honestly, though I still cannot really find attraction on those antique Gothic furniture..)

There are things to learn from the classical architecture because many of the styles link to the classical architecture.

Even I now become the jewelry designer, I still find great joy looking at interior, architecture magazines.

Then I realized that there really isn't this thing called "true original" any more.

It seems all the styles, designs, creations have been made and done.

There is really no room for anything that is truly unique and "original."

Perhaps unless any new technology human has not yet seen creates something completely new, maybe we have seen all the design and original creations. We may have created all the design?

Because all the greatest artists creations ever been created, there has to be something that they were inspired by.


Whether it is consciously or unconsciously incorporated into their work, artists always get inspirations from something.
Out of all the design competitions, true artists still stand out.
In NYC, there are many buildings that are so iconic and you know immediately who designed them just by looking at their style.
The Japanese architect, Ando is famous for his use of concrete. His buildings always give particular impressions that are so "Ando." It's stoic, and it gives the notion of serenity. It's usually integrated into the nature, environment. His work is always different, but his design core is always consistent.
It's so important as an artist and that is something I look up to.
Not only architecture field, but also the Japanese design big names like Muji, Uniqlo, or even restaurants like Ippudo changed the game.
They keep providing higher quality design and food, it really helped building the new standard for New Yorkers.
As a Japanese, I think it is something I should be proud of.

It used to feel funny to me to say that.
The Japanese people are normally very neutral about their nationality, myself included.
It does not mean that we are not proud of it, but we don't necessarily say it out loud or show that we are. In America, I see a lot of houses hang the flag. I see American flags, Italian flags, Polish flags, and some other flags in my neighborhood.
They are obviously very proud of where they are from and their country.
In Japan, if someone had a national flag hanging their house, that means something little different, at least to the other people.
It normally is seen as right-winged nationalist.
It's mostly seen when the emperor or his family comes to public but that's pretty much the only time I see the flag in Japan.
That's an interesting culture difference, I guess.
But, living in NYC for the last nine years, I started to think I should be and am little more proud of where I came from.
Doesn't mean I need to hang the Japanese flag to show off, but I think it helped me to find my identity here. Pigeon Dynamite is not something I find it very "Japanese" per se, but it is made by me and maybe there is something that has the Japanese element in the design...I don't know. 
But I definitely add my personal touch to it. Adding my own personal taste makes my jewelry unique and different. Whether it's customer service or making jewelry, I try to be more personal and caring more than conventional.
I love accessorizing my bags and clothes with pins, brooches, scarves to make little more personalized.
My jewelry is something you can mix up and enjoy creating your own style.

ずいぶんご無沙汰していました。

しばらくの間、製作に追われていて、今日もまだ製作の真っ只中なのですが

少しだけ時間が空いたのと書きたいと思うネタがふと思い浮かんだのでこういうのは書ける時に書いておかないと、と思い立って書いています。w

実はこのブログはいつも英語でバーッと書いてから訳すというのが基本なのですが（なんで日本語で少し分かり辛い表現があったりして変な文章が多かったりすると思いますが）

今回は実は初めてなんじゃないかと言う感じで日本語から書いてます。

もう人生の大半をアメリカで過ごしてきているので普段結構英語と日本語どっちも同じか英語がむしろ多い位に最初に頭に浮かぶ言語になってます。

さてさて今回はアメリカにおける日本のデザインとその位置について書きたいと思います。

ご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますが、私はもともとインテリアデザインと建築の方からジュエリーに転身したのですが、建築でもなんでも若い時は

これは好きこれは嫌い、これは退屈、これは斬新、となんでもかんでも白黒はっきりして物事を見ていました。私の性格というのもありますが、好き嫌いがはっきりしている、というタイプなんです。

でも最近昔は苦手だったクラシカルな建築を見て、少しづつ興味が湧いてきました。（アンティーク調のゴシック家具は未だに拒絶反応ですが。。）

そこから色々と学ぶ事も多いと気付いたのです。

更にそのデザインから反映された新しいデザインというのも全て繋がっていたりして

やっぱり建築は奥深いなぁと思っていました。

今この世界で完全にオリジナル、というのはとても難しいです。

ゼロから全くのオリジナルを作り上げる、というのはほぼ不可能じゃないかなと思います。

どんなアーティストにしろどこかでインスピレーションを受けていたり

意識的であれ無意識的であれ誰かのデザインやものを見て創造しているところが必ずあります。

そういった中で、「このデザインは日本らしい」とか「このデザインはとても北欧的だ」とかがあります。

やっぱり国柄というか、そういうのがあるんですね。（全てがという意味ではないですが。）

そこは多分日本人同士だと共感しやすい部分があったりして、知らず知らず日本人”寄り”なデザインになっているからなのかな？と思ったりします。

ニューヨークでは特に日本のデザインというのはアートシーンにおいても高い評価を受けています。それは世界中のものが集まる街の中でも日本のお茶屋さんだったり、レストランだったり、ギャラリーだったり、ユニクロだったり無印だったり、日本のもの、というだけでプラスの印象を与える程の地位を築いています。

それはやっぱりアメリカにおいても「やっぱり日本のものは質が良い。」という基準を超えるものを提供し続けているからこそだと思うんです。

日本人としても誇らしいですよね。

建築でも安藤忠雄さんの建物がニューヨークでも建設中です。

他と全く違う、という建物ではなくても、美しく、一目見て、あ、これは彼の作品だ、と分かるようなものを作れるのは、製作者としてとても重要な事です。

 完全なオリジナルでなくても、そこにパーソナリティーがプラスされる、それがデザインに昇華されて個性を発揮する。

私もジュエリーを作る上で、やっぱり自分のデザインを作りたい、一目でこれはPigeon dynamiteの作品と分かるようなブランドになりたいと思っています。

自分の好きなもののデザインしか基本しないので、多分デザインに傾向性はあると思いますが。

例えば私は普段使っているバッグにちょっと飽きたなと思ったらスカーフを持ち手に巻いてアクセントにしたり、ピンを付けたりして自分なりのスタイリングをします。

そうする事で自分だけのバッグ に仕上がって、また1日新鮮な気持ちになります。

私のジュエリーも普段手持ちのクラシックなジュエリーと組み合わせたりして楽しんだり。

日本人て、こういうちょっとした工夫が得意な気がするんです。

少しのディテールに気づくから、日本人のおもてなし精神や、ホスピタリティーが賞賛されるんだと思います。

ただ、私たちはそれを誇りに思っていても日本人ということをあまり意識しません。

ニューヨークでは国旗を掲げている家をたくさん見ます。

アメリカでは国旗を掲げる家はたくさんあるのです。イタリアやプエルトリコやスペインなんかもよく見かけます。

日本だと国旗を掲げてたら全然違う目で見られますよね。そう言った文化の違いも面白いなと思います。特にニューヨークに住む日本人の方はみんな日本人であることを誇りに思っているはず。でもそれを普段口にする事はほぼありません。

それでいて新しいもの好きで西洋のものにめっぽう弱い。

日本人ほどニュートラルな人も結構珍しいと思います。

そういうところ、オリジナルなのかもしれません。
