Nature's Gift: Herkimer Diamond
September is here. It's the time of the year that I start getting more energetic and feel more inspired by the nature.
New York's summer is just as unbearable as Japanese typical summer.
It's hot, humid, sticky, yucky, and gross.
Luckily, though, this summer in New York has been the best of the best summer I've ever had since I moved.
(Now I'm honestly so horrified by how cold this winter could be..knocking on the wood.)

Some of you may never heard of Herkimer Diamond.
It's actually not diamond but it's a diamond-like quartz/crystal.
The name Herkimer comes from Herkimer, NY.
It was found in the 18th century but the rock as old as 500 million year-old.
It is said to be the strongest healing crystal, and for god's sake, that old quartz gotta have some kind of mythical power.
The quartz is said to bring your potential and talent. Particularly it has the strong force to catch your dream so it sometimes is called dream crystal too.
Call me crazy if you will, I believe in the power of the natural stones.
The quartz can be mined from Tibet, Brazil, Pakistan, and a few other places but only the ones mined from Herkimer county, NY can be called Herkimer Diamond. (You have to be careful when you purchase these "fake" Herkimer-like quartz that isn't from NY.)
It's naturally 18 faced, 6 sided, has double terminated points on both ends and significantly clear.
There is no official grading system in quartz/crystals like GIA in diamonds, however, you can look its size, clarity (inclusions, striations, air, water, etc.,) shape (whether its terminations are broken, cracked or not) to assume its grade. Roughly, Herkimer Diamonds can be divided into those categories;
AAA, or AA+, grades are almost pristine; the inclusion is less than 5%, no cracks, and has almost perfect terminations. It's quite difficult to find these quality Herkimer Diamonds bigger than 20mm in size.
AA grade is almost as clear as AA+, with less than 5% inclusions, but visible inclusions and slight imperfection in shapes.
A-B grades have more than 5% inclusions.
B-C grades contains black inclusions or rainbows or both.
D grade contains significant amount of inclusions and has cracks and broken terminations or imperfect terminations.
I use AA+, AA, A, and B grade crystals for my jewelry, but not to degrade others(sometimes C for accent pieces), I love all the unique pieces with inclusions. I would use them regardless of their grades if it makes a great piece of jewelry.
They are all the history of the natural quartz and it's showing the character of each unique pieces.
And I personally prefer imperfection in original sources just like my vintage custom pieces.

さて9月になりました。この時期からはより一層自然にパワーをもらって製作意欲が高まります。何か空気とかからエナジーをもらってるイメージ。。
NYの夏は日本の夏と変わらない暗い暑くて私は大嫌いなんですが、
今年は奇跡のように涼しく、こっちに引っ越してきてから今迄で一番の夏を過ごしました。という訳で今年の冬がどんだけ寒くなるのか既にびびりまくってます。

みなさんの中にはハーキマーダイアモンドって？？な人も多々いらっしゃるかと思います。
まだ日本では定着していないと思うのですが、ここ数年前からじわじわと人気に火がついている注目の石です。

イアモンドと呼ばれていますが、本当はクォーツ／クリスタル（水晶）のカテゴリーに属するミネラルです。名前のハーキマーとはNYにある、ハーキマーカウ
ンティーから来ています。18世紀に発見されたときにそのダイアモンドにも似た結晶からハーキマーダイアモンドと名付けられました。
発見されたのが18世紀と言っても、石自体の発源は5億年にもさかのぼると言われています。そんな古い歴史をたどって現在に至る石ですので、単なるパワーストーンの中でも一番強いヒーリングパワーがあると言われています。
クレイジーと呼ばれてもかまいませんが、現に私もこういったパワーストーンを信じるタイプなので、というか5億歳の石に何のチカラも宿っていないと考える方が不自然とも思うんですが。。その石のパワーから、潜在能力や才能を引き出してくれると信じられているため、ドリームクリスタルと呼ばれる事もあります。
ハーキマーダイアモンドは18面を6つの側面に持ち、両端が尖ったダブルターミネートポイントになっています。何よりも加工されずにこのような素晴らしい透明度と滑らかさを表面に持つ事がこの石の大きな特徴でもあると思います。
ハーキマーダイアモンドと呼ばれるものはNYのハーキマーで採掘されたものだけに限られるのですが、ブラジル、パキスタン、チベット等その他の国でも採掘されるクリスタルなのでハーキマーダイアモンドと名乗って売られている商品には十分ご注意下さい。
何よりダイアモンドのようにグレードを付ける義務も無ければ、はっきりとしたシステムも無いのですが、以下のグレードに大まかに分けられます。
AAAまたはAA+とも表記されるグレードのものはインクルージョン（内包物）をほぼ含まず完璧な形のものをさします。このグレードのもので20ミリ以上のものは大変貴重とされています。私のショップではこのグレードからひとつ下のものを使用させて頂いています。
AAのグレードのものはインクルージョンが5％以下であるもの、ほぼ欠けている部分が無い事、
A-Bのグレードのものはインクルージョンが確認でき、形がいびつであったり、ヒビが入っていたりするものですが5％程度かそれ以上のもの。
C以下のグレードではインクルージョンや 内部粉砕等が多く形も両端が欠けてしまっていたりするもの。

それよりも低いグレードのものは現時点では私のジュエリーでは扱っていませんが、
ただそれは質が悪いという訳ではなくて、インクルージョンも歴史の流れから自然に起きた現象なので、美しいものであればレインボー入りのハーキマーダイアモンドや黒っぽい内包物が含まれているものも、バランス良く使えば立派なジュエリーになります。
全てに歴史があって、キャラクターがあるというとこがとても Pigeon Dynamiteらしいと思います。何よりも完璧なものは求めていないので、もっと味があって面白いユニークなものを作っていきたいと思っています。
