Handmade Art
Long before I knew I loved to learn English, my first real passion was art. (and still is.)
Just like any kid before learning how to read and write, I started drawing.
I grew up in a house where there was no family picture on the wall,
but paintings and photography art.
My mother used to take me to galleries and museums when I was little.
It was such a precious time and I loved watching her really enjoying the art.
And I also remember these artists had strong influence on me as a child.
There are quite a few I still remember to this day that made a 9, 10 year-old girl
really excited about making art with her tiny hands.
Usually after going to see these artists work, I would get inspired right away
and simply start making the same type of art;
After seeing Chihiro's work, I would start painting water color.
After seeing Kiyoshi's work, I would start tearing Origami papers and glue them.
One of my sisters was a really good artist and she had some great art books at home,
so I used to sneak in and read those art books after school.
By the time I started high school, my favorite artists were more well-known, European masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Dali, Gauguin, van Gogh etc.
so I majored in art in last two years of my high school.
At that time I was specially obsessed with those Dutch painters (Vermeer and Rembrandt.)
Naturally, when Girl with a Pearl Earring came out, I went straight to the movie theater.
Then I came to America and started learning more about art history and hand drafting.
But sadly, becoming an artist is almost promising that
you will have to prepare to be poor unless you are very lucky and very talented,
so I had to study general education as well.
When my first math teacher in college said that we are going to learn matrix,
I seriously was thinking about Keanu Reeves.
Somehow I could see math is different language of art,
but I definitely didn't understand the language quite well.
Now I am using different medium in different field of expression in art,
but I still execute my art the same way as I always did;
I use my hands.
Creating jewelry with my hands gives me the same joy as I got as a child creating art.
There is nothing quite satisfying like creation of art comes out from your hand.

英語を学ぶ事に喜びを覚える随分前から、
私はアートに対して尋常でない興味を持っている事に気づいていました。
他の子供と同じように、読み書きを覚える前から絵を描き始めました。
私が育った家は、いわゆる家族写真みたいなものが壁には飾っていない様な家で
むしろ絵だとか、風景写真だとかが飾られていました。
私の母は私が小さい頃からよく個展や美術館に連れて行ってくれました。
子供ながらにそれは凄く良い思い出で、純粋に絵画を楽しむ母を見るのも大好きでした。
今日でも未だに鮮明に覚えているいくつかの芸術家の作品は９歳か１０歳だった私に
新鮮な衝撃と影響を与えてくれました。
決まっていつもこういったアーティストの作品を見たあとすぐ、
私は同じ方法で作品を真似て作品作りに没頭していました。
たとえばいわさきちひろの個展を見たあとは、水彩画を。
山下清の作品を見たあとは、せっせとおりがみをちぎってちぎり絵を作っていました。
姉妹のひとりはとても芸術肌だったので、彼女の部屋にはいくつも素晴らしいアートに関する本が並べてありました。
こっそり忍び込んでよくわくわくしながらページを眺めていました。
高校に入る頃には、私のお気に入りのアーティストは
もっと世界的に名の知られた、ヨーロッパの巨匠、
フェルメール、レンブラント、ダリ、ゴーギャン、ゴッホ等になっていました。
高校の最後の２年は美術を専攻しました。
当時はオランダの画家が好きで（レンブラントとフェルメール）
真珠の耳飾りの少女の映画が公開されたときは、
自然と真っ先に映画館に観に行きました。
映画は今でも私のお気に入りです。（スカジョも凄く良かった。。）
その後アメリカに来てから美術歴史学やスケッチを学んだんですが
悲しい事に、今日の社会では大変ラッキーで大変才能がある場合でない限り、
芸術家になるという事は貧乏になる事を選ぶ事と等しいので
一般教養も学ばざるを得ませんでした。
大学の最初の数学のクラスで、教授がこれからマトリックスを学びますと
言ったとき、私が考えていたのは真剣にキアヌリーブスでした。
何とか数学もある種芸術である事に気づきましたが、
やっぱり私には全然向いていませんでした。
現在私は違った分野ですが、私がいつもしてきた同じ方法で
アートを表現しています。
自分の手を使って作り上げています。
手でつくり出すからこそ、満足のいく作品を作り出せるんだと思います。
